PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The mission of the Houston Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures. Since our inception in 1990, the Komen Houston Affiliate has awarded $19 million in grants and an additional $6 million for breast cancer research. The Komen Houston Affiliate raises funds through a variety of events including the Komen Race for the Cure® 5K walk/run. Seventy-five percent of these funds are awarded to non-profit breast health providers located in the greater Houston area for education, screening and treatment. The remaining twenty-five percent of the funds support the National Komen Grants Program, which funds groundbreaking breast cancer research, meritorious awards and educational and scientific programs around the world.

The Komen Houston Race for the Cure® is the largest footrace in the Houston area with over 25,000 runners and walkers attending in 2012. This intern position will provide development, special events, and administrative support for the Race.

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Race Intern will provide support for the 2013 Komen Houston Race for the Cure® including special event logistics, solicitation of sponsors, development duties, administrative duties, team management and customer service.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES -

 

Website / Email Related Duties

  • Assist Special Event Manager and Events Manager with the development, design and maintenance of the Race website content
  • Assist with the back-end administration of the Race website
  • Develop a schedule and write content for blast emails advertising the Race

 

Teams Related Duties

  • Assist with the planning and implementation on Team meetings
  • Approve and process team registration requests as appropriate

 

Race Duties

  • Oversee a section of the Race site on Race Day
  • Assist with confirming sponsor logistical needs
  • Respond to email and phone inquiries related to the Race
  • Take minutes for the Race Committee meetings
  • Organize and help plan the Survivor Party, Pink Honor Roll dinner, Pink Pledge Pals party, and Pasta Party.

 

Other Related Duties

  • Assist with the development and implementation of the Affiliate Strategic Plan as it relates to job duties
  • Provide support as needed for other Komen fundraising events and breast health education.
  • Attend Komen related events as needed
  • Attend staff meetings on a regular basis
  • Follow established Affiliate policies and procedures.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Currently enrolled full-time or part-time undergraduate student in the area of communications, public relations, women’s studies or related field
  2. Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and Outlook
  3. Interest in women’s health, special events, and marketing.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Ability to work Summer Semesters
  2. Graphic or website design experience

 

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  1. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact with board members, committee chairs, staff and volunteers
  2. Self-motivated team player with the ability to meet deadlines, remain flexible and adjust to changing priorities
  3. Organizational skills
